Waterside Art Group June 2017 Newsletter

Dear Members and Friends

It has been good to see so many of you, including our new members, turning up on Tuesday evenings and enjoying yourselves.  We have also been pleased that our demonstrations have been well attended.  John Edwards was on top form for our critique evening and we are sure that you learnt a lot from his well-informed reviews of our paintings.  Thank you to everybody who brought along their paintings.

Well, the year marches on at an unbelievable rate and we are already planning for our exhibitions!  But, before that, some other items of news to share with you.

Waitrose GREEN TOKENS = cash for the Group

Once again, Waitrose has kindly agreed that Waterside Art Group should benefit from their Community Matters scheme during June.  Three groups are selected each month and £1,000 is shared amongst them in the proportion of the GREEN TOKENS dropped into each collecting bin.

The more that are put into our box, the greater the sum that will be donated to us.  So, during the month of JUNE please ask for a token each time you shop in Waitrose and drop it in our bin.  If your friends and relatives do not have a great allegiance to either of the other groups please ask them to support us.  Many of you are on e-mail and social media nowadays so please broadcast this news to all your contacts.

Remember, this starts on Thursday 1st June and continues for the whole month.

2018 calendar

We have now held all four selection evenings and would like to thank everybody for submitting a grand total of 47 submissions.  This has given a wide range of paintings for you to vote on.  The committee is now making the final choice of paintings that will be included in the calendar, guided by your voting results.  We will let everybody know the result as soon as possible.  The next stage will be professional photography of the selected paintings and we will be requesting those very shortly.  Following that, the presentation and artwork will be designed (again, professionally) and then it’s off to the printers!  We aim to have the calendars available prior to our August Exhibition.

Our Exhibition at The Community Centre

31st July to 5th August

We hope you are busy painting in readiness for our exhibition.  Entry forms will be available from 20th June and the deadline for receipt of entries will be Tuesday 18th July.  The Entry Form and Model Release Form are also available on the website under “Members” or go directly there by clicking [here].  After feedback from members, the committee has made some slight alterations to the procedures for this year.  We will review how these work and refine arrangements for next year if necessary:

• The all-inclusive entry fee of £10 will entitle a member to display up to four ‘normal size’ paintings, up to four miniatures (maximum size 18cm x 13cm) and 20 printed cards.

• By popular request, paintings will be grouped by artist with nameplates above each artist’s work.  This should give more cohesion and impact.  The space per artist will be about half a board i.e. about 3ft wide and 4ft high.  It follows that this will determine the combination of size and quantity of paintings that can be displayed per artist.

• We have received many requests from stewards to simplify the record-keeping system.  This year we will trial an alternative system and seek your response.

Following the success of last year’s Craft Table we will repeat it this year.  So, as well as being busy painting, please get crafty as well!

Our Hampshire Open Studios (HOS) Exhibition at Derek’s home

19th to 28th August

As this exhibition will follow closely after our exhibition in the Community Centre and members may wish to submit unsold paintings from the latter to it, there will be no need to register painting names in advance.  ( We normally do this so that labels may be prepared but in the case of this HOS exhibition blank labels will be issued for members to fill out when they know the paintings they will submit)

Entry forms will be available from Derek and also on the website under “Members” or by clicking [here] and they should be returned to him by Tuesday 25th July.  Handing in of paintings will be either at that meeting or, preferably, at Derek’s home by arrangement with him.

Please note that there will be a Craft Table at this exhibition as well.  Anything left over from the Community Centre exhibition can be offered here subject to your agreement.  If we have good sales there, then we would appreciate extra items to offer at Derek’s.

As this HOS exhibition is targeting a very different audience to our Community Centre one, we are hoping for a good response.  However, as this is a new venture for us and we are unsure of the footfall we are going to charge a hanging fee of just £4 to cover up to three ‘normal-sized’ paintings.  As many of these as possible will be displayed.

Picture framing

Charly, our picture framer will be at the Group on TUESDAY 4th JULY to advise on frames and take away any pictures you need framing.

He will return them to the Group 2 weeks later on TUESDAY 18th JULY in good time for the Exhibition!   How’s that for service!

His fees are quite reasonable so please use him if you can.

Details are on the website, click [here] to view

Members near and far ……

We send greetings to Hilary, Jane and Mike who have now moved away to different areas.  We wish them well in their new locations.  Also, we send our best wishes to those members who, for a variety of reasons, are unable to be with us at present.
